Hoops for Heart

This week we ended our fundraising for Hoops for Heart with a celebration in the gym.  We had a blast showing off our jump rope and basketball skills!  When it wasn't our turn we spent the whole 45 minutes jumping and cheering for our classmates.  We showed so much spirit that we ended up winning JR, a stuffed animal heart, for being the kindergarten class with the most spirit!!  After everything was done we also found out that our class raised the most money in kindergarten!  We raised over $1,500!!  As a school, we ended up raising over $20,000!  That is amazing!!  Here are a few pictures from our day!

Living or Nonliving

We had beautiful weather this week!  To take advantage we spent some time outside as scientists.  We have been talking about what makes something living or nonliving.  Before we headed outside we learned that living things breathe, grow, and so much more.  We brought our recording sheet outside and the students were able to pick different objects that they saw to record.  Part of the recording process was answering certain questions to help us determine if it was alive or not.  Here are some pictures!

Senses

We have had so much fun these past two weeks learning about our five senses! The kids were able to investigate their senses through many fun activities.  We realized how important each of our senses are and how it can be difficult if one or more of our senses do not work.  Through the many books that we read about the five senses we learned that all of our senses send signals to our brain to alert us.  One of our favorite senses to learn about was the sense of taste.  We got to try foods that were sweet, salty, sour and bitter.  It was interesting to see what tastes were our favorites and which tastes we did not care for.  Here are some pictures from our tasting day!

Pawmetto Lifeline

We had a great day today!  After related arts we got to go down to Dockside to meet two special guests from Pawmetto Lifeline!  One of the employees came to speak with the students about what they do at Pawmetto Lifeline and the kinds of animals that they have.  We learned about how much it costs to adopt dogs, puppies, cats and kittens from Pawmetto Lifeline, what they feed them, what their job entails and we even learned about the importance of microchipping pets!  She also taught us how to be safe around pets that we do not know.  We must always ask the owner if it is ok to pet the animal first.  Since she brought a special dog, Dallas, to visit with us she taught us how to approach a dog and to let the dog sniff us out before we start petting it.  We were so excited that we all got to pet him!! Sweet Dallas is about one and a half years old and he is currently up for adoption!  If you are looking for a new pet Dallas might be the dog for you!!  Here are some of the pictures from today!

Handwashing

We had some special visitors from Irmo High School today!  The four high school students came to teach us how to properly wash our hands and why it is important to do so.  We learned that we should be washing our hands after we go to the bathroom, before lunch and after lunch.  Warm water is important while we wash our hands (not cold water or hot water).  Since this is the time of year when people typical get colds we talked about where to cough and sneeze.  Many people sneeze into their hands but this makes spreading germs easy!  Instead, we should all be sneezing into our elbows.  We have already been practicing this in our classroom!!  To demonstrate the germs that are released into the air when we blow our nose (without covering with our elbow) the high school students used baby powder to show how the germs would go everywhere!  We then got to put some "germs" on our hands (baby powder) to show how when we shake our friends' hands we transfer these germs.  At the very end we put our hands under this special light to see the germs that we already had on our hands.  This was very eye opening!  Below are some pictures from today!

100th Day of Kindergarten

I cannot believe that we have already been in school for 100 days!!  We had a great time celebrating the 100th day of kindergarten today!  We did a lot of things in school surrounding the number 100.  We wrote numbers to 100, read books about the 100th day, and even wrote about what we couldn't do at the beginning of kindergarten but can now do after 100 days.  Our favorite activity was guessing what objects each person brought in from home!  The students read their three clues to the class so that they could guess what objects were in their brown, paper bag!  Everyone was super creative and it was such a fun activity!  Here is a CrAzY picture from our 100th day celebration!!
