Week of October 8th

What we've been learning...

Phonics: I can know and say the first sound of a word.
This week we have been identifying the first sound in words and sorting pictures by their first sound.

Reading: I can name the characters and setting in the story.
We talked a lot about what the setting of a story is and how to identify the setting and the characters.

Poem:
Every week we find words that we know in our new poem.

Writing: I can write a simple sentence.
This week we started to discover what makes a sentence.  We wrote a sentence about liking or loving a color.  Then we drew a picture of something that was that color and labeled it.  When we labeled our picture we made sure we "stretched it like bubble gum".  When students shared their writing, they read the sentence the way that they wrote it- with a period or exclamation mark!

Reading Workshop: I can use a book to back up my thinking.
This week we spent a lot of time "adding a pinch of us" to our reading.  This means we added our own thinking to the books that we read this week.

Math: I can read, write and count numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
This week we worked on the numbers 6-10 during our whole group math time.  We also spent time in math tubs working with other students on skills and concepts that we need extra practice with.

Science: I can learn about apples using my five senses.
These past two weeks we have learned about our five senses.  This week we specifically studied apples using our five senses.  Here is a picture of the students labeling their five senses.

Star Student:
Lily was our "star student" this week!  She brought in books and other special items to share with the class so we could get to know her better!

Traveling Book Bag:
The kids are having a great time sharing books that we have read in class with their families!!

Secret Reader:
Chellie's grandma was a secret reader!

Michael's mom was a secret reader!

Officer Minemier was a secret reader!

Second Steps:
This week we started to talk about feelings.   We talked about how we can show people our feelings and how we can tell how others are feeling.  This is a picture of the kids telling "be calm bunny" a time when they felt happy!
