Week of September 24th

What we've been learning...

Phonics: I can recognize and name letters.
This week we have been exploring letters in different ways.  One way we have been exploring them is through games.  We have played alphabet bingo and one of our favorite games was "Crocodile, Crocodile"!  The kids got to reach into the crocodile's mouth and tell the letter that they pulled out.  If they knew the letter they got to keep the bean bag.  If they did not know the letter they would have to feed it back to the crocodile.

Writing: I can label a picture to tell a story.
This week Ms. Gillen and I have worked with the students on how to label their stories.  We learned that it is important to label our stories to give our readers more information.  We have been stretching our words "like bubble gum" and writing down all of the sounds that we hear.

Social Studies: I can learn and interact as a community of learners.
This week, as scientists, we have been studying ants to see how they work together as a community.  In return, we have thought about how we can be like ants and work together as a community of learners in our classroom.  When we went on our ant walk we observed a group of ants gathered around a dead bug.  We decided that they were working together to bring the bug back as food for the rest of their family.  We also pretended to be like ants and we had to work together to get our whole group through the ant tunnels!

Officer Hoover and Arko:
We had so much fun with Officer Hoover and his K9 Arko on Monday!  We learned all about Arko's job and then had the opportunity to pet him!

Reading Workshop: I can notice and practice strong moves that partners make.
We have been working on how readers read and talk with their partners during reading workshop.  We love sharing our books!

Shared Reading: I can find important parts of a story.  I can read from left to right.
We have discovered the title page, front cover, back cover, author and illustrator this week.  We have also been practicing reading texts from left to right.  When reading and singing our color week poems we have pointed to the words in our own little books to practice.

Guest Reader:
This week we had a former Learning Lamb come and read to our class!  We loved the book that Emma Grace chose to read to us!!

Friendship Friday:
On some Fridays we dedicate writing workshop to writing kind things to the friends in our class.    I pull sticks so the kids know who they will write to for that day.  They spend writing workshop really thinking about what they love about that friend and write/ draw pictures for them.  All of the students take turns delivering their notes and looking the friend in the eye to tell them what they wrote.  The kids all said that it made them feel good to hear the things that other people loved about them!

Star Student:
Jessie was our "star student" this week!  We have loved learning about things that are important to her, seeing pictures of her and her family and even reading her favorite book!!

Proud Wall:
The students have started adding their work to our "Proud Wall" this week!  This is a place where students can display work that they are proud of.  It is all work that the students want to share with others.
